Project one - Third Shoot; Queensgate Mall Car Park

This is my contact shet from my third shoot. The time that I went was a good time because it meant that I could capture the Car Park being quite empty in some areas and in others I could capture it being semi full. I think this was a good shoot for my last shoot before hand in.

Project one - Second Shoot; Queensgate Mall Car Park

This is my contact sheet from my second shoot for project one. I found it a bit harder to take good pictures this time around because I want to take different ones to the first shoot but am running out of ideas. I went down to the Car Park at both peak and off peak times to capture the fullness and emtiness to show the difference in time and the effect it has on the space.

Initial Research - Andrew Ross

This image taken by Andrew Ross appeals to me because of the way that it relates to my space in a big way. I find this shot appealing because of the way that the cars are lined up and the buildings behind are able to be seen. I like the way that Ross has taken this picture by showing that there is a city beyond the parking garage at 'Palace Station.'

This image by Ross is from the same series as the one above but I find them equally interesting. The thing I like about this photo is the way that Ross has chosen to incorporate the ridge line with the snow line. They are almost exact. This image is relative to my project in the way that the mini's are parked resembles a Car Park which is the space that I am focusing on for this project.

Initial Research - Martin Parr

This image by Martin Parr is interesting because of the fact that it is an indoor resort/beach. I find this image interesting because of the symmetry that lies within it and the way that he has taken the shot at an high angle that almost gives an aerial view to show the amount of people and beauty of what can be created to look  genuine.

I find this picture from Martin Parr’s Car Park series extremely relevant to my project as I too am focusing on a car park for this assignment. One of the first things that I see when I first look at this photo is the surrounding buildings acting as the walls of a covered car park. I also like the way that Parr has chosen to have the bright green Volkswagen as nearly the main subject and the light green car off to the left just barely being seen.

Initial Research - Edward Burtynsky

I find this photo by Burtynsky relative to my project because this area tends to come across as a sort of  ‘Car Park’ but for aeroplanes.  When I am doing my next shoot for this project I am going to take into account the angle that Burtynsky has used in this image to see if I am able to achieve something like this as it shows a wide view of the amount of aeroplanes that are taking up the space.

This photograph by Burtynsky also relates to my subject of interest that I am working on because of the detail leading up to the pyramids that illustrates empty car parks although this may not be the case. I also like the geometric shapes and symmetry that lies within this image.

Initial Research - Bob Thall

This photo by Bob Thall reaches out to me because of the way that he has chosen top capture both the cluster of tall buildings on the left and the single tall building in the top right hand corner. To me this gives a sense that it is a large city but the focus point is where the two people are and the empty space that surrounds the line up of cars.

If someone where to ask me what I thought of this picture, I would tell them that I think it is amazing. I can’t pin point actually grabs me the most about this picture but the arrangement of the almost checkered windows of the tall buildings in the background and the vertical reinforcing concrete poles become nearly the main subject rather than the spiral in the middle because of the repetition of them through the picture once you really look at the image.

Project One - Space; Proposal

For this project I have chosen my subject to be the Queensgate Mall Car Park in Lower Hutt.
I have decided to focus on this space because of the contrast in light through different times of day and when this space is empty and full.
I chose this space because it is close to where I live and opposite where I work therefore I see this space frequently.
Throughout this project I am going to explore the Car Park in a different way to people that just park their cars there. I am going to achieve this by exploring different camera angles to enhance the way that people view this space as just a car park. By using a tripod to capture the beauty of the car park I will be able to show the geometry that exists within this space. A camera angle that I am going to explore is a long shot which will show how tremendous this space is and the amount of beauty that lies within it.

Mini World

I don't think that my panorama quite fitted into the excercise of the mini world but i adjusted it and made it something different/strange.

Project one - First Shoot; Queensgate Mall Car Park

This is my first shoot for this project and I thought that it went really well. I think that i have a few good and useable photos but need to do more to be able to make a series that goes together for this project.

Finished Panorama :D

After playing around with this Panorama in photoshop for like an hour, it's finally finished.
Woohoo! :P

And then I adjusted the colours ;)

Contact Sheet from Panorama Shoots

I found it difficult to take these panorama shots as I wasn't using a tripod at first and found that once I viewed them on the computer that the images were not usable as I didn't move the camera far enough over from the previous photograph frame. Unfortunetly I found this out the hard way but ended up changing the place and achieved a manual panorama using a small tripod and flat surface.

Panorama Attempt # 1

I think that this panorama turned out good enough for a first time attempt at making a manual panorama. Although my images may not line up correctly (when you zoom in) I am quite pleased with it but am unable to get rid of the overlapping lines that are fairly obvious. I am going to work on this and repost the fixed panorama.
